Amrit Siddhi Yoga is one weekday paired with one nakshatra — seven pairs in all, and no more. Work begun in it is traditionally held to reach completion.
Calculating…
Scanning the whole year — this usually takes a few seconds.
That is the whole rule: the mapping is one-to-one and complete. No weekday is left out, and none has a second partner — the seven pairs are listed in full just below. It is also why the yoga is rare: a given pair can only meet when that nakshatra happens to fall on that weekday, which for any one pair is a handful of times a year.
A panchang day carries two things at once: a weekday, which repeats every seven days, and the nakshatra the Moon is passing through, which changes roughly once a day. Amrit Siddhi Yoga is formed when those two coincide — when a weekday falls on the one nakshatra assigned to it. Nothing else is consulted: not the tithi, not the rising sign, not the planets. That is why the yoga can be stated as a table and why its timing is arithmetic rather than judgement. It is also why it is uncommon. Each pairing needs its nakshatra to land on its weekday, which happens a handful of times a year.
Seven combinations, one per weekday and no weekday without one. Find the weekday, and the yoga holds while the Moon is in the nakshatra beside it — from sunrise or from when that nakshatra begins, whichever is later.
It begins at sunrise or when the nakshatra begins, whichever comes later, and it ends when the nakshatra ends or at the next sunrise, whichever comes first — the yoga needs both its weekday and its nakshatra, and the weekday runs out at dawn. So a day marked on this calendar is rarely auspicious from waking to sleeping: it carries a stretch with a start and a finish, and that stretch often runs past midnight into the following date. A window that opens before dawn is listed under the day whose weekday forms it, which can read as one date earlier than a calendar counting midnight to midnight. The table gives both ends for every day it lists.
Thursday plus Pushya is an Amrit Siddhi pairing like the other six, and it is also Guru Pushya Yoga — Guru being Jupiter, which rules both the weekday and the nakshatra. Days on this calendar carrying that badge are the ones two traditions agree on at once, which is why it is the combination people wait for rather than merely accept. It is classically prized for beginnings involving money, study and anything meant to grow: buying gold, opening an account, starting to learn. The one long-standing exception is marriage, which is not usually fixed on it.
Beginnings that are meant to last: starting a course of study, taking up a new post, a first journey, a purchase intended to stay in the family. The name is the claim — amrit is what does not perish. It is not a substitute for a muhurat chosen against your own chart, which is a narrower question and a different page.
