Indu Lagna is counted from the ninth lords of both your Lagna and your Moon, and the Lagna moves a whole sign every two hours — so an imprecise time can land it on a different sign.

The ninth house is bhagya — fortune — and Indu Lagna takes its ninth lord twice over: once from the Lagna and once from the Moon. Using both means the result depends on the chart as a whole rather than on a single reference point, and it is why two people with the same ascendant can arrive at different Indu Lagnas.
Each of the two lords carries a fixed ray value, a kala. The two are added, divided by twelve, and the remainder is counted forward from the Moon's own sign. So Indu Lagna is a SIGN arrived at by calculation — not a planet, and not something an ephemeris reports.
