The Panchang is the day measured five ways — tithi, weekday, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Each changes at its own moment rather than at midnight, so a day has a shape rather than a label.
Calculating…
A Panchang day runs from one sunrise to the next, not from midnight to midnight. That is why a window on this page can carry tomorrow's date and still belong to today, and why the weekday turns over when the sun comes up rather than when the clock passes twelve. If you are reading this before dawn, the Panchang day you are standing in began yesterday morning.
Each tithi is twelve degrees of distance between the Moon and the Sun, and because neither moves at a steady speed it can run anywhere from about nineteen to twenty-six hours. So it rarely lines up with a date. That is why every limb above shows when it ends: “today is Dvitiya” is half an answer if Dvitiya has four hours left in it, and for choosing a time the half that matters is the half that says when.
Vara is the weekday, which you already know. Tithi runs the lunar calendar — festivals and fasts fall on tithis rather than on dates, which is why they move through the year. Nakshatra is where the Moon sits against the stars, and it is what personal calculations count from. Yoga and Karana are derived rather than observed: yoga from the Sun's and Moon's positions added together, karana from half a tithi. Five measures of one day, not five names for it.
Everything here is built from sunrise and sunset at the place you choose, so change the city and every row changes with it. A printed almanac is computed for one city — usually the one it was published in — and the further you are from that city, the further its timings are from yours. This page asks where you are before it answers for exactly that reason.
The same day carries periods of its own. Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal each take one of eight equal parts of daylight, assigned by the weekday, and none of the three ever overlaps another. Abhijit is the short auspicious muhurat around midday, the one period looked for rather than avoided. Chaughadiya cuts the same daylight a different way, into eight named parts that repeat through the week.
Three things come out of a glance at it. The tithi tells you where you are in the lunar month, which is what festivals and fasts are actually dated by, so it answers whether today is the one you meant. The weekday and sunrise fix the windows — which hours are avoided and which are looked for — and those move every day and with every city. And the sunrise time tells you when the day itself turns over, which is why something late at night may still belong to yesterday. What it will not tell you is whether the day suits you. This is the same page for everyone in your city; a question about you personally is answered from your own birth nakshatra, not from here.
